PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem recently announced that beginning in 2008 a policy will be in place for drug testing. The list of banned substances will include most known anabolic agents, including testosterone, as well as beta-blockers. A positive test will be considered conduct unacceptable under tour rules and could result in fines or suspensions. This decision has been supported by all of golf’s primary ruling bodies. This essentially means that any sanctions on players as a result of a positive test will effect participation in all the major tour events. The debate continues regarding the issue of whether the use of performance enhancing drugs in professional golf is even a problem. Gary Player reported earlier this summer that he was told that certain players have or are using performance enhancing drugs. Other players have stated it is not a problem on tour at all. It is my opinion that with the high level of competitive nature in golfers & the ease of obtaining the substances, that there is some level of abuse. Only time will tell.
