Baby Boomers Need To Be Ready
Friday, June 27, 2008

Ready for what? Getting older that's what. As a baby boomer, I am always thinking about what I am going to be like when 60, 70 & 80. I certainly want to be able to play golf and even walk the course.

I recently read an article in the New York Times that spoke specifically to the issue of maintaining physical function and having the ability to do the things we currently love to do. As stated in the article, exercise is the tonic for staying active.

We know that as we age, we lose muscle and bone mass as well as, strength, power and flexibility. This results in loss of mobility, independence and the ability to do the things we we love to do. And playing golf is one of things we love to do.

So if you want to maintain or improve your current level of function, make sure you are on a regular exercise program and take care of yourself!

Tiger Is Amazing!
Monday, June 23, 2008

As most of you have heard by now, Tiger won the US Open with a left ACL tear & stress fractures in his lower leg. It is not unusual for an athlete at his level to play with an injury & in pain, but the amount of focus and determination to achieve his goal is just amazing.

I don't want to talk about the stress that goes into the left knee especially with his swing or the importance of the ACL and other knee structures but I want to ask a few questions. It is amazing that he kept the injury a secret for almost a year (general public that is), how did he do that? Also I understand he injured the ACL while running. Straight ahead running is not a common mechanism of an ACL injury. Did he twist it in a hole or was he doing some crazy cutting drills? Not recommended for any competitive golfer. Then in addition to playing on a unstable knee, which is terrible for the cartilage, he developed stress fractures in his upper tibia. Not sure if that happened during rehab after the recent cartilage surgery, but it sounds like it did. That should never of happened. I have rehabbed a lot of ACL's and if that would have occurred with one of my patients......I would not be feeling good.

I guess this takes me to my point, Tiger you need to slow down! or your body will not make it for you to play competitive golf into your 40's and beyond. But who knows maybe he plans to retire after he breaks all the records by age 40 (or earlier).

Yes, Tiger is amazing, but please don't model his decisions regarding his health.
